The Port of Shanghai has handled 50m teu for the second consecutive year, reaching the milestone a month earlier than it did in 2024.
The achievement underscored another record-breaking year for the port's annual container throughput, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Yangshan Port Area's opening.
In the first eleven months of this year, Shanghai port handled 50.56m teu, up 6.7% year on year. Its annual container throughput is expected to set a new record, maintaining its position as the world's busiest container port for the 16th consecutive year.
During this period, the Yangshan port area handled 26.25m teu, up 9.7% year-on-year, and is projected to exceed 29m teu for the entire year.
In December 2005, the first phase of Shanghai's Yangshan deep water port officially opened. Within five years, Shanghai's annual container throughput surpassed Singapore's for the first time, establishing it as the world's largest container port.
In 2024, Shanghai port became the world's first to exceed an annual throughput of 50m teu. This success is attributed to the efficient operation of automated terminals, the expansion of new business models, and the development of new growth drivers, including the northern expansion of Yangshan.
Upon completion of the northern operation area of the Xiaoyangshan port, it will add 6,100 meters of new shoreline to Shanghai Port, including 5,500 meters dedicated to container terminals. This expansion will include seven berths capable of handling 70,000 tonne-class vessels and fifteen berths for 20,000 tonne-class vessels, with an annual designed throughput capacity of 11.6m teu.
