The term “next-gen supply chain” refers to the evolution of supply chain management strategies and technologies that enhance the efficiency, speed, and productivity of logistics operations.

This advanced approach leverages cutting-edge technologies and innovative processes to meet the increasing demands of modern markets.

This chart shows the projected growth of the global next-generation supply chain market, with values of US$32 billion in 2019 and an anticipated increase to US$75 billion by 2030. It means that the next-gen supply chain market is expected to grow by approximately 135% from 2019 to 2030.

This significant growth suggests an increasing investment and reliance on advanced supply chain technologies, which often include enhancements in logistics, automation, data analytics, and connectivity.

Container News has developed a compound indicator to create a nuanced metric assessing the adoption of next-generation technologies by major global ports.

This approach allows for a detailed evaluation of how well ports like Jebel Ali, Pusan, Los Angeles, Rotterdam, Singapore, Shanghai, and Hamburg are integrating advanced digital and automated solutions into their operations.

According to open-source data, these ports have been identified as leaders in adopting new technologies that enhance efficiency, security, and sustainability.

Based on the compound indicator data provided for various global ports from 2020 to 2024, we observe a mix of stability and volatility in technological adaptation and connectivity across key maritime hubs.

The Port of Singapore consistently leads with high scores, demonstrating robust resilience and progressive adoption of next-gen supply chain technologies. This development along with its strategic positioning close to the major chokepoint of Malacca Strait has contributed to the significant distance it maintains from the other ports.

The stability is closely mirrored by the Port of Rotterdam, maintaining high scores throughout the period, indicative of its strategic focus on advanced logistics solutions.

Similarly, the Port of Los Angeles demonstrates remarkable consistency, maintaining a steady performance, despite the fact it is being placed lower.

The difference between the first three ports could be attributed to the different geographical positions, which is a crucial factor affecting the overall supply chain profile.

Conversely, the Port of Pusan exhibits significant fluctuations, with a marked decline in 2022, suggesting challenges in maintaining technological competitiveness or connectivity. A similar trend is seen at the port of Hamburg, which has recorded a decrease since its peak in 2021.

The port of Shanghai shows a gradual recovery after the significant decline in 2021, hinting at ongoing efforts to upgrade and integrate advanced technologies.

On the lower end, Jebel Ali, despite its lower scores, shows gradual improvement, reflecting slow but steady strides towards enhancing its supply chain capabilities.

This varied landscape is an attempt to assess the differing paces and scales at which global ports are embracing the next generation of supply chain enhancements.
