
Hateco Group and APM Terminals celebrated the the grand opening of their new terminal in Haiphong, Vietnam, Hateco Haiphong International Container Terminal (HHIT). The new terminal has two deep-water berths at Lach Huyen port in Haiphong City capable of serving vessels up to 18,000 teu in size.
APM Terminals is part of the Maersk Group, and HHIT will be used by the Gemini Co-operation of Hapag-LL“As the most modern and the largest deep water container port in Northern Vietnam, the new facility will enable businesses, create jobs and connect Vietnam to the world in a more efficient, cost effective and green manner. As we look ahead, Maersk is committed to deepening our collaboration with Vietnam and with our strategic partner Hateco,” said Robert Mærsk Uggla, chair of A.P. Moller - Maersk.
APM Terminals shared best practices on safety, port automation, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and process optimisation and decarbonisation as part of the project. The two parties signed a memorandum of understanding at the opening to deepen and expand their strategic partnership in port and logistics investment and operations in Haiphong, and in potential new strategic locations in Vietnam.
“In just 30 months, what was once a dream has become the most modern maritime gateway for Northern Vietnam... We appreciate the government of Vietnam’s foresight and trust to offer this strategic infrastructure project to Hateco. We also feel privileged to work alongside experts and advisors from Maersk and APM Terminals, who shared their insights from global operations to make the HHIT project construction and operations smarter, greener and faster,” said chairman of Hateco Group Tran Van Ky.
The grand opening was attended by Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam Mai Van Chinh, and Danish Ambassador to Vietnam and Laos Nicolai Prytz.

HHIT has Vietnam's largest STS cranes with a reach of 24 containers, an e-Rubber-Tyred-Gantry (RTG) crane system, and the NAVIS N4 port operation system. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and RFID technology are integrated into its automatic gate system, optimising productivity and enhancing operational accuracy. The port also boasts a 5G network and round-the-clock surveillance for security. The first container vessel to call the port was ESL Dubai
