Chrome ore has emerged as the fastest-growing dry bulk commodity trade of 2026, as the collapse of South Africa’s ferrochrome smelting industry pushes greater volumes of unprocessed ore onto ships bound principally for Asia.

Chrome ore is used primarily to make ferrochrome, an alloy of chromium and iron. Ferrochrome is then added to steel to produce stainless steel and other corrosion- and heat-resistant alloys.

Roughly 90% of mined chromite ultimately feeds the metallurgical sector, with stainless steel by far the biggest end use. Chromium gives stainless steel its characteristic resistance to rust and corrosion.

Smaller quantities of chrome ore are used in refractories, foundry sands and chemicals, including pigments and chrome compounds.

Analysts at Greece’s Ursa Shipbrokers put global seaborne chrome ore volumes in the first half of the year 44% above the corresponding period of 2025, an increase of approximately 3.77m tonnes.

That percentage growth puts chrome comfortably ahead of many of this year’s other expanding minor and major bulk trades. Ursa data shows manganese ore up 20.6%, clinker 10.6%, wheat 8.5% and corn 9.3%. Nickel ore, another standout performer, increased 33.8%.

The explanation lies principally in South Africa, historically both a giant chrome miner and an important producer of ferrochrome, the alloy produced by smelting chrome ore and used heavily in stainless steel.

South Africa’s energy-intensive smelters have been crippled by high electricity costs and poor economics. Reuters reported in June that just 11 of the country’s 66 smelters remained operational, although preferential electricity arrangements are now being introduced in an effort to revive production.

AXSMarine tracking data supplied to Splash shows seaborne ferrochrome trade plunging 53.2% in the first half, from 890,000 tonnes a year earlier to just 410,000 tonnes.

The missing processing capacity is effectively shifting part of the supply chain offshore. Instead of converting chrome ore into higher-value ferrochrome close to the mines, South Africa is exporting more raw material for processing elsewhere.

China sits at the centre of the shift. Chinese customs data shows chrome ore imports reaching 14.05m tonnes during the first six months of 2026, up 41.5% year-on-year. Imports from South Africa climbed 35.8%, while shipments from Zimbabwe increased 61.5% and those from Turkey surged 152.3%.

The surge is running ahead of immediate consumption in places. Chinese chrome ore inventories have climbed above 5m tonnes, weighing on prices and pointing to significant oversupply.

For shipping, however, South Africa’s industrial difficulty is proving a tonne-mile positive.

The less chrome South Africa turns into ferrochrome at home, the more raw ore must be loaded onto bulk carriers and transported thousands of miles to Asian furnaces — making an obscure steelmaking ingredient one of dry bulk’s surprise stars of 2026.
